WASHINGTON -- The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers about the potential risk of a potentially fatal, fatal allergic reaction to the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.
Viagra, the most popular brand name drug for treating erectile dysfunction, is also a potential drug of the class of drugs called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors.
Viagra, which is sold under the brand name Revatio in the United States and Europe, has been linked to a potentially fatal reaction, a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction, to the drug's active ingredient, sildenafil citrate, which is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension.
"This is concerning to all patients, and the FDA is continuing to work with our other partners and the public to address the issue," said Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "Consumers can still purchase the drug safely and effectively."
Viagra, which is in a class of drugs known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, is the most popular brand name drug for treating erectile dysfunction, or impotence.
